grumbling / grinding from rear

i took the old girl up the road today for a quick test drive and on the way back there was this grinding noise coming form what appeared to be the back passenger wheel

i have noticed a slight oil leak on the drain plug of the rear axle.

i will check the fluid whats the best tool for removing them plugs and what oil do i need in the axle

It's usually an internal square hole - sometimes a square drive from the socket set will fit. EP90 oil is the lubricant.

anyone got any ideas as to what this noise is??????? please

or is the general census the axle oil

if the noise is from one side then more likely to be a wheel bearing than the diff.Drive the car and listen for a change when you go round corners ,if the noise lessens when you go round a left hand bend then the noise from the rear passenger side will be a wheel bearing on that side. As the weight comes off the inside wheel and goes onto the offside wheel all the pressure goes onto the offside bearing. Vis versa if the noise is from the drivers side.If it is a wheel bearing you will definitely notice the change.and the noise will be louder when you go round a right hand bend as more pressure goes onto the dodgy side. thanks for that something i did notice was it only really happened when i accelerated when i was coasting or slowing down it stopped

Could well be the diff - likely to need replacing if it's been running with NO oil. Could just be something rubbing on the propshaft - or even a brake drum rubbing against the backplate. You need to get under to find out!

just to let u all know i tightened the drain plug it took a full turn so was quite loose.

got a litre of 90 oil and it took near enough 3/4 of the bottle so it was practically empty i'd say.

took it down the road and it grumbled for about 100 yards and then stopped so it was probably that what was making the noise.

The diff oil also lubes the rear wheel bearings - so it's still likely that bearing has been damaged if it's been running dry.
