Why doesn't HTML work?

I can't use HTML in posts - I'd prefer to do proper link and image tags instead of that horrible bbcode, but although it works in my sig it doesn't seem to work in the main posts.
My options say HTML is on and the 'Disable' box is not ticked.
Any ideas?

More generally, how come the forum is still running such an old version of PNphpBB?

HTML is fairly heavily restricted - we've had a lot of problems with 'inappropriate' content, and it provides an easy way for hackers to get into the site.
As to the version of the bulletin board (as well as the rest of the site) I'm just creating a duplicate so I can test upgrades etc. There's a fair amount to do first though, as the site isn't consistently 'postnuked'. I don't want to try to upgrade it in its current state

All I want to do is <a href></a> and <img src=> but neither works.
Thanks for the comment, and I understand the security thing.

OK, cool. I look forward to the upgrade with bated breath. One HTML tag I was trying to use recently is <strike></strike> - there doesn't seem to be an equivalent BBCode tag.

According to the control panel, the only html tags allowed are:
<b><i>b,i,u,pre,object,param,embed</i></b>
I'm reluctant to change this without finding out why its set like this.

<strike> is just a strikethrough on text, so it's no more problematic than <b></b> or suchlike.
I notice from my earlier post that img tags do work, but not <a href>. I would have thought that embed would be worse than href?

I don't know why A is filtered out (at least there is the [url] equivalent in BBCode), but I would guess somebody enabled EMBED and friends so as to allow videos and those scrolling photo gallery things.

That's why I'd cheerfully get rid of it. In the meantime, I'll give thanks to Flashblock...

There's various formatting mods for phpbb (and so PNphpBB), but personally I feel a great deal of them just don't add anything to posts (which is why I tend not to install them when throwing a bb up myself). I've certainly seen strike tags in some flavours of phpBB, as well as left/ right/ centre alignment and other things.
