grease gun - how does it work???

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance but I've just purchased a grease gun (http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... grease-gun) and to my dismay it didn't come with instructions.

To start with is there a particular sequence of actions to load it? I've filled the canister with grease by pulling gradually the tee-thing. Then after screwing the canister back on I've pushed the tee back but there was hardly any resistance. I would have expected some resistance as on a sealant gun.

After a bit of pumping the grease came out of the end of the hose so it should be ok I guess.

Final question: how are the jaws supposed to lock the nozzle on the greasing nipple? Do they come out by themselves when you start pumping?

Hello Pascal,

I assume that you are talking about a non cartridge grease gun and you are filling from a tin. If so did your tin of grease have a circular disc with a central hole on top of the grease. In which case what you did is correct.
Handles do vary and some do go back into the gun body after it is filled, some also have a bleed nipple to get rid of any air that may have got trapped in the gun.
The nozzle end is spring loaded and goes over the nipple and is held by the nipple, do ensure that you wipe the nipple clean first before fitting and keep the nozzle square to the nipple or else you may find grease leaking out of the end.

that looks very similar to mine but mines sealey, and i know what u mean why don't they give u instuctions

i went onto sealy's website and basically it said what has been said already dip the end in a tub of grease and pull back on the lever.

but i will say when i first got it i tok the end off and used my gloved fingers and scooped it into the cartridge messy but worked alot better

so in future come on grease gun manu facturers give instructions and make them easier to use pleaseeeeeeeee

and all u do for the nipple is just push it on and it automatically locks onto it and then to remove just tilr it slightly while twistin and it pops off.

Hello Steve,

you will find that using the small tubs of grease with the disc as I described so much better and quicker than your finger method. That and very few if any airlocks. Just push the gun body down onto te grease and pull the handle. Without the disc in the tub it just does not work.

An old trick worth using is place a piece of (clean) cotton cloth over the grease nipple before attaching the connector.
It helps make a better seal.
Try it - I learn that 30 years ago and always use that method.

Great! The first thing I did was to throw the plastic disc in the bin. I have to fish it back now!

I have a cheap laser tools gun that takes both, I find the cartridges much better - no mess (which it says the machine mart one takes), they are very cheap from diy stores / ebay etc and the ones i get have instructions on the side.
