Cylinderheadstuds SV engine

Post by svantemann »

Is it possible to buy new cylinderheadstuds for the side valve engine somewhere ??

One is already broken, and others looks bad.

What threadsize is the studs in the engine ? In the nut end ?

The thread on both ends of the cylinder head stud is metric M10 x 1.5mm pitch. They should be available from the Morris Register.
Alternatively your local engineering firm should be able to produce them to your requirments. I am informed that 8.8 to 10.2 grade high tensile steel would be suitable. Carefully extract a stud from your engine to check the thread lengths. There are 3 lengths of studs.

Sorry to differ but I'd be surprised if Morris were using metric threads way back then ?
Are you sure it's not Whitworth ?
If so I'm reasonably sure that if the actual pitch of the thread might work out at 1.5mm the angle of the cut will be different.
That means whilst it will screw in it will only he holding on the peaks of the thread rather then the full area and therefore will be liable to strip easilly.

Hi Paul

Mike Perry is correct, the sidevalve engine does contain some metric threads. I can't remember all the details without looking it up but it relates to Morris buying out a French engineering company & using their engine parts for the sidevalve engine.

Thanks for putting me right.
I never knew that .
I've learnt something new today :D
Actually it's a little strange working on our 1996 Chrysler Neon - a mixture of Metric & AF threads / spanners.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your answer.
I will make new ones myself, using steel 10.2 or higher.
All studs are out of engine without snapping

All threads relating to the Series MM and earlier engines have metric threads with Whitworth bolt heads. I believe this relates to French Poppe and White engines which were originally fitted to Morris cars. This has the advantage that if you can always fit a metric nut to the bolt or stud.
