Hi,
Well Duncan has been at the garage for a month now! And I'm missing him like crazy...The head gasket was replaced and then he leaked water left, right and centre. He has now had the head planed and a new gasket fitted. He originally had no compression on cylinders 3 and 4. the garage phoned and said there's now no compression on number 2. The garage say the head is heavily corroded and pitted and has probably been leaking for some considerable time. I think we might be looking at a new engine...but where would I go for one? Club spares? Any help gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Chris
It it's just the head that's causing the problem, you should be able to pick one up easily and cheaply enough (though I saw a s/h standard 202 head fetch 50 quid on Fleabay recently, madness!). Seems overkill to replace a good bottom end for the sake of an hour changing the top end to me
Ah, fair nuff - Didn't look at the topic section when reading new posts!
Still reckon it must be a better plan to put a good head on a good engine than replace a good bottom end with an entire (and so unknown quality) new engine..
That's fine...you're probably right...but I'm just not sure how good the engine is...the garage say it's very corroded and pitted...they took photos to show me...it certainly didn't look very pretty..
PM Carlo ( WPR'some numbers'B) he might have a spare head!

The trouble with planing a side valve head is that you can take too much off and reduce the thickness between the combustion chamber and the water passages. This can cause fatigue cracks and ruin the head. Club spares usually has heads, make sure you get the correct head, early or late for your engine.
Have a look wether your car has a waterpump and thermostat housing.
If you do you have a late sidevalve
What year is your car? (Am I correct in remebering that it is '52?)

I have at last had a chance to get some information. Yes Duncan is a 1952 version...June if I remember correctly...Duncan has thermostat housing but no water pump...there appears to be a plate covering where you would expect the pump to be. There appears to be fan blades attached to the dynamo. It's a Morris re-con goldseal engine and the original engine number is 142277.
So I'm not sure how helpful that is...
I am still trying to track down a replacement engine or head...
Club spares don't...there is one on Ebay...but that's up in Scotland...
any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Can you not get it put on a pallet and delivered by a courier service - or contact the many Ebay couriers. It's usually the other way round for me - South Coast of England. But if you need it, you have to go for it.
