Could it have been the gearbox tension cable at one point?

That happened to me the other day, was under the car and noticed the very same cable. It goes through the cross member and is adjustable on the other side. After pondering for some time I consulted the Haynes manual and found a reference to engine/gearbox stabilising cable. Didn't say what it did though. My best guess is it stops the heavy engine/gearbox moving forward when braking, perhaps without it there would be excess strain on the engine/gearbox rubber mounts?

I believe its supposed to minimise clutch judder when moving off. Doesnt do that on my cars though!

And it earths the engine/gearbox to the body.
