Speaker question

My mate has an aftermarket JVC stereo. He wants to wire it to 2 speakers only, (in the rear) instead of the typical 4.
If my memory serves me well, it's ok to join together the speaker output wires on either side (front & rear) and wire them directly to 2 speakers, thereby achieving maximum power output from the stereo...or am I havering (again!)?

Incidentally, the aforementioned 2 speakers are big kick-ass 8 Ohm 200 Watt Celestions which can handle the unit power output easily. 8) 8)

Thanks in advance, peeps....all opinions welcomed. :D :D :D

I have always wired them thus:-

Front left + to + on left speaker
Rear left + to - on left speaker
Front right + to + on right speaker
Rear right + to - on right speaker
all 4 - connections isolated seperatly

That will bridge the internal amp to push full power through the 2 speakers.

Most modern systems are quite capable of driving one set of speakers only - you don't need to connect separate outputs together.

Do check the details in the user guide, but my Sony system has outputs for a power amp, plus the 4 individual speakers + woofer.
It does show only 2 speakers fitted as an option, no need to bridge (the total output is limited)

Cheers,

Colin
