1098 gearbox with 803 lever conversion - update!

Have taken the rear castings off the 1098 & 803 boxes. It is not a direct swap. The bearing housing that sits in the 1098 box appears to be stepped and is wider than the milled out seating in the 803 rear casting. There is also a "peg" off to one side that locates into the 1098 rear casting.
The 803 casting is thinner at this point than the 1098 one and I'm afraid there wont be enough metal left there to retain the spring ring and packing washer.
So, are the rear bearing housings inter-changeable and the 3rd motion shaft bearings the same on the 803 & 1098?
I may well look at using a 948 box instead as this sounds like an easier conversion!. Comments and warnings heeded!
Thanks again for your greater knowledge, much appreciated.
