I was asked today by one of the local shop owners about Road Tax on a 20 year old Moped. He asked: would he get free road tax for it as its over 20 years old. I told him that as far as I knew, it would have to be pre 1973. Can someone tell me if I gave him the correct information. Please. :D

I think he's best off just checking with the DVLA really. I wouldn't have a clue about two wheelers.

On a side note, I do find it funny, in a small and silly way, that some of my workmates think that their cars will be tax exempt because they're nearly twenty years old. They'll get a shock if they don't check up on it and find themselves facing a fine! They've even refused to believe me when I've told them that it's not the age, but the registration year that counts. Oh well, I tried to help . . . :)

Even when it was age based, it was 25 years not 20.

Thanks Alex......Yes I knew that. He thought it was 20 years for Motorcycles / Mopeds but I told him that it was 25 years. However, the Government had made a cut-off point of pre January 1973 for all vehicles, doing away with the 25 years rule. So I was right with the information I gave then. I just thought I would double check that there was no seperate ruling for motorcycles / mopeds.

Funny that they don't check for themselves, isn't it? The information has been out there for years on the interweb, accessible to all and sundry.:)

I think in this instance, with me going into the shop in their mid-conversation and on seeing me...they thought it easier to ask me about it.....I must admit, at the time I myself was not sure about the situation with moped taxation....but then again on the other hand I should have advised them with more confidence in my knowledge at that time.....as I will in future.

Lol.. So he's too mean to pay the 15 quid it costs to tax a moped?

Makes sense to me :D

15 quid of petrol in my moped would get me almost 4 gallons of fuel, in other words almost 600 miles :D

Hmm, I can still fill my Vespa tank for less than a fiver - maybe it's just a small tank.
