It could be the oil pressure warning switch, the oil pump or the engine is very worn. It could also be a faulty oil pressure relief valve.

I would say that the stopping in heavy traffic was probably fuel vapourisation due to excess engine bay temperature and not related to the oil pressure problem.

I agree with Cam, the two won't be related. It has been very hot so it might have well have been fuel vapourisation. Engine stoppage also occurs with a failing coil - which usually overheats itself.

I would go along with Cam & Chris as my oil light is working fine but my big ends are rumbling/knocking meaning an engine rebuild is very soon to be on the menu, I am sure Willie can expand but I think the oil light comes on at very low pressure if there is a problem associated with the engine whereas yours sounds like the relief valve

The oil pressure light is supposed to come on when the pressure gets below about 8PSI

The easiest thing to do is to fit a new oil sender unit( this is
situated to the rear of the distributor with an electrical lead
connected to it). Not too expensive and could be the problem.
The oil pressure relief valve spring should have no effect at
tick over speeds only controls the high end oil pressure(60
lbs Max). If a new switch does not cure it then it looks like
worn engine main bearings/big ends.
