Morris Engine Oil

Post by coogee »

I now need to change the oil on my Morris so what Castrol engine oil should I buy for my 1966 Morris Traveller?
I want to get the best oil for Betsy so which one should I get.

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiong ... 18#7009318

Thanks

Philip

20w / 50 is best. The other oils in your link are for pre 1950's or racing and rallying cars so wouldn't be suitable :o

It doesn't need to be Castrol though. There have been a number of threads here about the best type of oil (do a search) but it's mostly down to personal choice at the end of the day. Expensive isn't always best.

Duckhams, Unipart, Comma, Penright etc there are still quite a few types out there even some supermarket ones see what your local motor factor has as they normally have a bigger range.

Before you buy the can, check for the API rating on the details - I think the latest is "SJ" - the "C" series is for diesels.

If it doesn't have a rating - don't buy it (note - The H******s Classic oil doesn't have any ratings on the can).

Cheers,

I'd say you want at least SF grade, but I've seen Duckhams 20/50 with SH or SJ which is better.
Price does not equate to quality - a good quality oil will have a good rating. An oil with no rating might be worse than the old oil you take out!
The better rated oils will degrade less quickly and also be able to hold more dirt without leaving sludge deposits. However if you change your oil more often, this becomes less important!

I bought 2 cans of Duckhams 20/50 last week which are SF but the 1 can I had left in stock is SH.

yes - I got caught out like that - I bought Duckhams 20/50 at last year's national rally (from a Minor spares trader - at a fabulous price) which was SH, but when I ordered some from a Leamington retailer, it turned out to be SF.

Comma 20W50 has an SJ rating

I am sure (back in Holland) that I have seen 20W50 with an SM rating, can't remember what it was though
