no drivers side rear brakes

Post by cactusjack »

I live in Spain and have taken my 1969 Morris Minor saloon for an mot, it failed on the back drivers side brakes not working. I took the wheel and drum off and found that the cylinder did not move when the brake pedal was pushed. The cylinder was dry and nothing leaking. The passenger side rear brakes are ok just my side. Any ideas please.

Most likely problem is that it has seized.
The brake cylinder has a hole in the back for the handbrake mechanism and often the rubber boot is missing - this causes rapid failure due to corrosion. Even with the boot in place they often get badly corroded.
Most likely you will need a new cylinder (and boot). If the brake pipe is old and/or the pipe fitting is rusted on to the pipe you may need to replace that as well.

It is sometimes possible to get them moving again - but then you risk it developing a leak and ruining the shoes. Better by far to get a new cylinder - may as well get two, one for each side, and then that's the rear brakes sorted for a few years to come !
