Hi,

I'm planning on replacing my heater unit ('68 model) and wondered if anyone had any tips on removal. I'll be replacing the heater with another standard unit and wondered how easy this is to do. Presumably I'll need to drain the radiator first?

I can see the two brackets fixing the rear of the heater to the bulkhead area but can't see how the top of the heater fixes to the car under the dashboard. Where are the fixings and are they easily accessible? Will I need to remove the glove boxes?

Any tips much appreciated.

Shut the heater valve off and clamp the other heater pipe that will reduce the amount of water you will have to play with, take the carpets out as there is bound to be a bit of spillage.
If I remember there are only 4 bolts holding it in place and the 2 you havent seen are the ones to the front of the heater going under the dash, what I cant remember is if the parcel shelf needs to come out, when you have the new unit to hand you will see the mounting points and give it a good clean out to make sure its working at its best and check that the heater pipes are in good condition to enable good water flow.

It helps if the tray is undone at the front and lowered out of the way. It also helps drain the spillage of water off the tray. An old towel or two can be a help. When I had mine out I minimised the spillage by shutting the heater valve, removing the return hose at the motor, plug it, feed it back through into the cab and into a container. Open the valve and the water in the heater should mostly drain out.

I still can't locate the fixings under the dashboard though. Does anyone know how I get to these?

You have to take the speedo out to get at the fixings if I remember correctly, so loosen the screw in the side of the speedo via the glovebox (there should be a little round access hole). You shouldn't need to disconnect the speedo, just pull it out of the way.
