anyone know what it's made of? Aluminium? It's not ferrous.
I just want to make sure I put the right sort of paint on it and don't melt it or anything

And some sort of alloy Juliet, just treat it like normal metal, to bare metal, then primer and paint.

I think it's some kind of alloy / monkey metal. Probably best to etch prime it first.

Monkey metal for the benefit of the uninitiated is made by throwing all the old bits of alloy into a pot and melting them. It was used for badges brackets etc. Tends to be mainly aluminium, but with other bits and pieces thrown in!
Neil Marmite-Tomlinson has a chrome plated one and very nice it looks too.

Ray I don't have any etch primer and the pennies are really really running low, as in i have absolutely no money at the moment. Is it essential to etch it or could I just clean it and degrease it and rough it up with some beefy wet-and-dry instead?
