Advice On New Drivers' Insurance

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while and now have a bit of a question to put to you all... I'm a new driver, so with no no-claims, 22 years old, and am looking at the dread question of insurance! I've read over several other discussions of insurance on the message boards in the last few days, with various recommendations, particularly of Aon, as they're nice to the MMOC, and FJ. However, as far as I can see FJ want you to be over 25, which I'm not (I'm getting 'round to actually calling them), and the quote I've had from Aon is over £500.
While I appreciate that this is quite simply what it costs to begin with, and is still cheaper than on a more modern vehicle (being on my mum's Polo would be about twice as much!), I wondered if anyone knew anywhere else I might look that would specifically cater to my current needs? Any tips will be very appreciated, after all a couple of quid saved on insurance can be put towards a hundred other things!
Thanks!
all the best, Wiglaf

Are you an MMOC member? The club negotiates hard to get good rates for younger members but if you're not in the club, that may be why the price was sky high.

Thanks Judge, I'll give them a call and see how things compare...
Yes, the Aon quote does take MMOC membership into account and that £22 saves about £220, so I'm certainly not complaining, especially as even before that it was cheaper than elsewhere!

Try Peter Best. They were cheapest for me by a long way when I was first looking for insurance.

its a shame aon can not compete with us older drivers, we are best shopping for other cxompanies.

I'm suprised at your quote wiglaf, I'm 19, about 2 years with AON £325 with one accident my fault. Mind you my excess is £350.

Just got my monthly MG mag from my local club, there's an article stating that Footman James has been taken over by AON, so there's a bit less choice now apparently

The first year of driving (4 years ago 18yo) my brother and myself were on my mums poilcy on the minor (£400) Then I took over the policy (19yrs old ~10months clean liscence £320, and its steadly gone down to £180 with a change from a standard 1098 trav to a standard convertable.
I have just got a modded trav and taken it to london so the premium has gone up to nearly £400 again.
This is all Footman james. give them a bell!

Thanks for all the various tips - FJ look to be marginally more expensive than Aon, so I'll get my membership properly sorted (currently a family member with the parents) and get myself sorted come Tuesday! Possibly see if I can find a pair of scuttle panels while I'm spending money too...
cheers -- Wiglaf

I wonder if my premiums will mysteriously rise now that Aon own FJ . . . ? Because FJ were by far the cheaper of the two.

Funny that I found the opposite..... I was with FJ for years till the Sec; of one of my local clubs advised AON, I found them, and still do, to be a lot cheaper and more benefits included

Afriad I had the direct opposite experience - then again, I've sadly written off two previous Minors . . . . .

<strike>I've just spent all morning on the telephone to various insurers, and the result is that I feel a very strong urge to breach articles 8 & 10 of the Terms and Conditions for these message boards. As it is, I'm still not insured. I may try to explain, and see if anyone can help when I've calmed down a bit.</strike>
All is sorted, fine and dandy: stress over!
