Hi folks

I need to replace the rear hub oil seal on the nearside. Just one question at present: Do I need to remove the brake cylinder for this operation?
Thanks

Dom

In a word, no. You'll need to take the shoes off or they'll get oil on them (but you'd guessed that already). The cylinder doesn't get in the way.

The nearside hub nut is a left-hand thread BTW, and please get a socket or spanner rather than use a chisel on it!

Cheers Stig. Any idea offhand what size socket is needed?

most people do just use a chisel.... but a socket would be best.

The wheel cylinder makes a nice levering point to help remove the hub.

The correct size is 1 1/8" Whitworth, but both 1 7/8" AF and 48mm will do the job.

Thanks for the info chaps. A chisel sounds a bit brutal though! I always try to make a point of keeping chisels away from my nuts! Now to find a suitable socket... lets see what ebay has to offer!

Most use a chisel on this particular nut only!

For the non gorillas amongst you :D, I can supply an 1,1/8 Whit open ended or a 1,7/8AF combo spanner in NOS condition - I have 1 of each left. When they're gone, they're gone :(

Many other sizes available also.

Assuming you don't want to put a nut back!

It's ok - it get's chiseled on the other face then. Actually just a dent is made in each direction and the nut can be used perfectly satisfactorily over and over again. It doesn't want to be all that tight anyway!
