Engine flush ?

Post by flatbum »

I am going to change the oil in my 1970 Minor.I have only had the car for a few months, and judging by the state of the body and interior when I acquired it, I shudder to think the last time it had a good service.Should I put an engine flush through it before I change the oil ?

I wouldn't, as my brother did this and it caused several oil leaks. Perhaps changing the oil and filter, then again after 1000 miles would be an idea?

I wouldn't either. Run the engine till warm, then let it sit for a couple of minutes then drain the sump, remember and take out the dipstick as it drains. I agree with 'Minor Hickup' redoing it after 500-1000 miles.....I change engine oil filter and oil every three months regardless to mileage done.

Yep - just regular changes are best. No need for fancy 'synthetic' oil either - just good old 20W50. Asda/Morrison stuff if fine if change regularly.

Of course theres always the old trick of using diesel engine oil for 500 miles to clear out any gunk. Of course the high detergent levels may remove sealing deposits around the piston rings, but that why you only do it for 500 miles.
