Can anyone tell me if I failed to sort this would it affect the MOT brake test?
This will normally pass an MOT - the brake test is done in neutral on the rollers, therefore the tester is unlikely to realise,
You find this when driving but is most likely to be a problem when braking and engine braking - as you change down the clutch stays open. On a Minor this is a serious fault! I've had a few cars with this problem and although it's possible to ignore (momentary release of the brakes to allow the clutch to engage) it's best to fix it ASAP.
On mine, they all had a severely worn pedal shaft. One had ok bushes in the brake pedal (maybe they had been changed by previous owner) but the others needed bushes as well as the shaft to be fixed.
Easiest way is to exchange the clutch pedal and shaft for a recon one - or get the new shaft and have to re-weld the clutch pedal onto it... or if you have the right equipment, you can weld up the worn areas of the shaft and grid it back to size.
On one car, the spacer had rusted fimrly onto the shaft - this means you can't dissassemble anything! That one took me a few extra hours to sort out (I ended up welding onto the spacer in order to turn it on the shaft).
