Silicone v's Dumdum

I got two new rear traveller doors the other day and needless to say I want to prepare them and get the windows and panals back on. But in order to weather seal both can I use ordinary silicone to get a waterproof seal on the panels and windows or do I have to go out and buy that horrible (but proven) Dumdum stuff and use that instead ????? :-?

I think Dumdum is preferable because it doesn't completely dry out inside the joints, which allows it to cope with movement in the wood and makes it possible to prise it apart again in the future.

If you want to use something "modern" in a tube then check out whats available at B&Q etc but silicon isn't really suitable.
What you need is a non setting mastic type product. I think such is sold for window fitting and also roofing.
Personally I'd use Dundum every time as it's proven to work.

It's a thick black gunge used to seal joints which (in theory) never completely dries out. I've found it has a habit of getting onto the soles of your shoes and making a mess of the carpet when you go back into the house.

Also silicon will also break down over time, when exposed to the elements I found. :-?

No bother so. Sounds like i'll be using the black gunge. Thanks for your comments.

Its the only thing clear silicon and it took me forever to remove it with thin nose pliers and a small craft knife and a magnifying glass to see it in the groove, just to enable me to clean the doors up properly.
