The exterior door handle on the passenger side front door of my 4-door saloon is loose when the door is locked but returns properly into position when the door is unlocked. Would that be a missing/broken spring?

I've checked on the ESM web site but they don't sell door handle springs separately. Can anybody tell me what the spring looks like? A picture of a spare unmounted door unhandle showing where the spring goes would be great!

it is about one inch high.

The leg of the spring fits into a groove which is peened over to hold the leg in place.
Often, this isn't enough to hold it & the leg will come out of the groove resulting in your loose handle.

If they're cheap enough, buy one by all means but the chances are that you just need to refit the leg in the groove & secure it (bu re-peening or use a very small screw).

yep spring gone. might be just as easy replacing full lock if its the passenger side one with a good old one. the lock needs out anyway if you want to change the spring.

Ok I'll have a look first to see if it's still there. By the way how do you remove the door card? Is it just a matter of pulling gently with a flat screwdriver?

Remove window winder, door opener and door pull, teh you should be able to do as you say

Phew! Done it, I can't believe I've spent 4 hours on getting this little spring fixed. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching the handle go back nicely now!

The spring was still there (different from the picture above though); it had just jumped out of the groove as Scott mentioned. So it was just a matter of putting it back in the groove with a joly good hammering to ensure it doesn't come out again.

The tricky bit was to remove the handle from the door, as the window frame has to come out first. The workshop manual says that you should be able to lift the window glass until you can disengage the lifting lever from the channel but I couldn't get there. Maybe you need to remove the rubber/velvet seals first?

I eventually managed to remove the door handle with the glass in, so that bit's sorted.
