Exhaust query

I am in the process of thinking about my exhaust :P

My S/S exhaust is stupidly loud, as some of you know.

I have a spare S/S silencer.

So I am thinking of adding that to the system.

Will that be a problem with the engine breathing etc? It will still be the same diameter.
And will I lose my much loved fart?

it will lose a little power by adding the extra silencer, but as you say it is very loud, you probably have a bit more power than standard with the loud exhaust. Its not an exact science but the fact that it is louder suggests it produces more power! so adding the extra silencer should not reduce power too much. the exhaust note will probably be slightly different i think, but i dont know how much different. worth a try I reckon.

You stand a good chance of loosing the 'fart' as this is a product of only having one silencer on what is quite a long system. If you quieten the system then yes you will loose some power, whether you will notice is another matter, but really if you don't want the noise then you realistically have no choice.

ONNE, i have a stainless exhaust system and it was far too loud for me
so I fitted an extra straight through silencer between the leaf spring and the petrol tank. It completely eliminated the dreadful Minor 'roar' and gives a pleasant exhaust note with no noticeable loss of power. (even fitting the old mild steel exhaust box at the rear made for far less noise but, being mild steel,it will rot through very quickly as the rear doesn't
get hot enough to burn off the condensation.

The dreadful roar will be lost??

The large bore stainless system is loud despite it being twin box. I find at 60-70mph it's not too bad (4.22 diff) but at 50 there is awful resonance. As the rear of the pipe sticks out well beyond the boot I'm toying with the idea of getting a box made up to go across the rear of the car behind or in front of the fuel tank.
A standard stainless system is louder than a mild steel one but not unduly so in my experience - but then I do have a fair bit of soundproofing in the car. Underlay off-cuts - that's one advantage of working in the department store trade. 8)

Peetee, investigate the midgets, one of them, I cannot remember which,
had a silencer which was mounted across the rear of the car I think.
(probably the 1500)

We already do this with the K series, which was only available as 2" but we can now offer it in 1.75" in either alluminised steel or stainless.

You'll probably find that your existing silencer is not stainless internally - and has all rotted away, effectively doing no silencing. So why not just cut it out - and fit the replacement one in it's place.

Alternately the padding has all gone. On another forum someone was saying certain lead replacement additives seem to eat the stuffing!

Both of the stainless systems I used were brand new and used for less than a year before selling.

Surely though the cheapest option would be a Bosal mild steel system, mine is lovely and quiet and retains a fairly good 'fart'. Sure it won't last forever but then it only cost £30.

Problem with the mild steel system is you lose even more power.
I run one on a 1275 and whilst it sounds nice you can almost 'feel' the engine wanting to rev more and being suffocated.
I'm still waiting for some clever Minor parts company to start knocking out affordable large-bore mild steel systems. I'm sure they'd sell like hotcakes.

Yes - and lets face it - they shouldn't really cost much more than the small bore system - the additional amount of steel etc must be insignificant, and manufacturing time just the same. Any enterprising Traders reading this ?????

And they might even be cheaper, as it is more like a normal size exhaust, unlike the tiny diameter of the Minor system

why would the mild steel system take more power away? Isn't that not just a matter of less noise (feeling of power?)

I still haven't decided what I'll do, I have been to a specialist company today, as recommended by one of our regulars, and sadly they were no use at all, as they don't do small bore systems...

Come on Jonathon - how about commissioning a run of 'medium bore' exhausts suitable for Minors fitted with larger capacity / tuned engines ??

Would like to be involved but we are commited to several new projects already, and time and funds are not available.
I can not see that a limited run of exhausts will be less than the current offerings let alone the same price. The reason you only pay £40 for a mild exhaust is due to mass production. To even think of making this project viable for both parties we would need more advance orders than the 4 so far on here.
We can make our own systems but as individual orders or low volume the cost would be similar to the stainless big bore available already. :o
