Headlamp Rims

Post by alanworland »

I'm having a job fitting my headlamp rims (well I can't) When hooked on at the top, the bottom of the rim wont go over the chrome part that holds the actual glass lamp. Seems like it wants squeezing oval to get some more dimension out of it. Thought I remember these went on/off quite easily? I don't want try too hard for fear of damaging the wing paint.
Does anybody know if the rubber gasket behind the headlamp bowl comes out to the corner of the wing? mine would seem to end roughly halfway under the front rim, if I ever get them on that is!

Hi,

I replaced the headlight rubbers recently (on a '68 car)and it can take a bit of fiddling to get everything back in the right place. I had the same problem as you and it was just a matter of removing the headlight and first making sure that the headlight bowl is fitted flush to the wing and all screws are tight.

Then make sure that the metal 'inner bowl' is fitted back in the same place as before. There are a number of 'spare' fixing holes on the wing and I made the mistake of using the wrong holes so try moving the inner bowl around a bit.

Finally make sure that the metal spring from the bowl is fixed to the back of the headlight and that the headlight isn't jutting out an an angle before fitting the inner chrome wing. The chrome outer rim is easier to fit if you hook the rim on the top first. Again this might need some fiddling to ensure that it is back in the same position as originally.

With regards to the rubber gaskets I also had the same problem as you. I bought 7 inch ones thinking they were the correct size but they were for a mini rather than a minor so only reached half way up the the wing. It sounds like you'll need to get some new ones.

Hopefully this all makes sense. Just persevere and you'll get everything fitting properly in the end. Good luck!

Louise

Hi Louise,
Thanks for your response. I took all this apart so long ago (20+ years) that I can't really remember what with new wings, headlamp bowls chrome, bits etc.
I have no metal spring from the bowl, the whole inner headlamp assy is held by the 3 adjustment points only (it all looks correct and square) I shall keep trying. A good point about the rubber gasket but I bought mine so long ago I couldn't tell you where they came from! I shall have to start with an order for some Morris ones.
Thanks Alan

One of mine simply doesnt fit. Its merely jammed on. You cant tell to look at it.

They did use different types over the years, might be worth confirming your bowl matches your rim... if that doesnt sound too rude!
What would Macgyver do..?

I shall have a proper look tommorow - might be a bit warmer in the garage with some sun shining through the window!

Well I've had a proper look and decided that the rubber between the bowl and the wing was wrong, not large enough on the OD so it wasn't reaching the corner of the wing.
Because of this I was a bit reluctant to try too hard for fear of damaging the paint!
However with the correct gasket and a bit more effort I found that I could get a slim screwdriver through the rim securing hole and into the fixing bracket and lever/pull the rim on with some grease to help it slide and hey presto all done (I took them off again to make sure it wasn't just a fluke!)
Thanks to you all.
