HIF44 and engine breathing

I have just got my hands on a HIF44 carb and MG metro inlet manifold what throttle cable do I need for the carb, also using the front engine breather there seems excess crankcase pressure, as oil seems to be leaking out of different places. Its a gold seal recon A+ unused engine do you think things will improve as the rings bed in to the bores, or if it would be better for me to take the rocker cover breather of the old engine and use that?

have you taken all the wire mesh and gunge from the front timing case breather.
also a good way to breath the system is to use the mechanical pump out let on the side of the block

Use a bycycle brake cable inner and outer cut to length for the accelerator cable. There should be a plate between the carb and manifold to hold the outer cable stop.

John,
I have an HIF 6, with a quadrant from I think an HIF 44 and use a standard Minor accelerator cable.
What size engne is it and how many miles has it done? What oil did you use when it was first run?
Mine is a 1380 (1275 Midget based) and for breathing I use just the front timing chain cover breather connected to the HIF with the standard 'breathing' rocker cover cap.
With the engine warmed up and idling, what do you get if you remove the rocker cover cap? Ideally the engine should speed up very slightly and there should be a very slight 'suck' if you put your hand over the rocker cover opening. There shouldn't be any pressure.

Yes - use the rocker cover from the old engine - and connect that breather to the connection on the side of the HIF carb. I just used the throttle cable I had on the car aready - but I thin k in fact it was a 'long' Mini cable - designed to give silky smooth action! I doubt the rings will 'bed in' - but the timing cover breather could well be gunged up. In any case - two breathers are better than one.

Engine is 1275 only done about 250 miles using 20/50 oil, haven't yet fitted the hif carb so at the moment just using the air filter breather connection.

John,
You may find with the HIF that its breather connection will give a bit more vacuum and so better breathing, and less leaks - so long as the timing cover filter is not choked up, but with a new engine this shouldn't be a problem.

With a new engine it definitely shouldn't be a problem. You need to wonder about the 'newness' of it.

Engine is defiantly new had the sump off to have it repaired due to the engine been stood on a concrete floor for 15 years, all the crankshaft con rods are bright steel colour also rocker shaft also bright steel.

Just got round to fitting my HIF 44 carb & mg metro inlet and exhaust manifold and new exhaust, since I have done this and fitted the breather pipe to the side of the HIF carb all oil leaks have disappeared.
