1968 1098cc Minor shudders and shakes when pulling away

Hi There,

I am new to the world of MMs, having recently purchased a 1968 1098cc 4 door Minor in almond green. I love him (horrace) to bits, but he has developed a problem that i am hoping someone might be able to help with.

When pulling away, just as you raise the clutch above biting point, the whole car shakes, and it looks like the rear axle almost tramps in the wheel arch. I wonder if its the clutch springs worn out, or if its a problem with the axle. Just wondering if anyone might have had these symptoms before, and knows what i need to do to rectify it?

Could be just worn UJs in the prop shaft - easy to sort out - or engine/gearbox mounts, again, pretty simple. Welcome, btw

PS Be careful though - if it's a '68, it's NOT an MM, that's an earlier model

Hi, thanks for that, i shall check those things this afternoon. Its a '68 Morris 1000, I think i got a bit confused! Can you check for worn ujs by grabbing hold of them and giving them a good shake? I have a spare so i could just bolt that on to see if it improves?

Try to twist the prop by hand in both directions rather than shake it.

Turned out the rivets on the clutch plate were loose, so the plates had about quarter of on inch of play.

Just thought I'd post this incase anyone else was experiencing the same thing!

Mine does this too - I'm hoping its down to my knackered rear springs - being that it actually 'tramps' when pulling away from stationary and when attempting to drift it around roundabouts.
Its certainly something thats gotton progressively worse through my two years ownership.
