another of my pig-ignorant questions

Post by wibble_puppy »

hi guys,

Silly question I'm sure, but isn't it relatively rare to find a Minor which hasn't been modified - for instance with an alternator, halogen headlights and disc brake set-up, if not a radio as well?

Image

if this is so, aren't the Heritage Mod and Sports Mod classes going to get a bit crowded? and a bit random in terms of comparisons (eg if they are going to be used for judging cars at rallies)?

Actually if you read some of my earlier posts Juliet, you will see that this is an aspect that does concern me :(

which posts? and you are concerned because you want to have a good many Minors kept in their original condition/to their original spec?

Please don't misunderstand Juliet, I have no objection to Minors being modified (within reason  ) but I am concerned by the apparent number of good original cars that are being totally restored and/or modified. If this continues, how will future generations know what an original Morris Minor looked, or for that matter smelt, like :(

Please bear in mind this is my opinion not the registers, although the judging etc. will be raised at the meeting Julian and I are planning. Minor mods like halogen headlights/alternator and more serious mods like disc brakes/seatbelts are peoples idea (including mine) of a safety upgrade. Most people currently on the register have more serious upgrades such as Cam's 1380 powered car and v8's. I also agree with Bill's view, I have Doris who I intend restoring to concours class and Phoebe is staying as original as possible. Us Minor owners are a diverse bunch but we all share a common goal, keeping as many of these stunning machines on the road as possible. As for the register being over-run with heritage and sports class cars, so be it! We have room for as many cars on the register as people can throw at us, the register as it stands at the moment is only just over the 50 mark so the more the merrier :D I hope thats helped clear the waters a little.

I agree that good original cars should not be touched, but surely a well restored car on the road is better than a heap of rust in the scrap yard?

BTW, I try and keep as much of the original car as possible, even using just parts of repair panels or making my own sections if most of the panel is still good- best to keep it!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

OK, that makes a lot of sense :D

I guess this makes me wonder whether my van, which has only the sorts of mods you describe, ie minor ones for safety etc, belongs on the Register at all - given that its only real modification is the colour of its paint (and interior)? Image

Well according to the rules as they stand at present both your custom paint job and your disc brakes your van would qualify as a modified minor.

To simplify, anything that deviates from the original puts it into modified.

will be interested to learn how the judging is gonna be done

obviously at least a million extra points should be awarded for paint which makes you go "oh dear lord why would someone want to do that?"

The smell is one thing you can never remove from a minor. Even my V8 one still smells like a minor - or is it me
