I just want to m,ake sure i have been adjusting mixture on my HIF correctly

To lean the mix you turn the screw as if you were unscrewing it, and to richen it would be the way you do a screw up on a conventional thread?

If the HIF44 is the same as the HIF38, then I think that's correct.

hmm I took the carb off and stripped it... the needle and jet are worn as is the spindle!!! put an HS4 on for the time being and the car is behaving itself!

I have an HIF44 on my 1275. I just can't get it to run right. It's rich right up the the point when the screw is right out at which point it has a flat spot and is popping whenever you reapply the throttle.
It's going in for attention on Thursday, I'll let you know the prognosis.

Maybe not the correct needle - and worn jet. Where's it 'going in' to ?? Do they know anything about HIF carbs ????

Peetee, you can also move the needle up and down in the carb piston, which will alter the mixture alot. then fine tune using the screw.

A place recommended to me by the local Mini club. I specifically asked this question, so if I get it there and the bloke doing the work 'ums' and 'ers' when I ask him he'll get his ears boxed.

You can't really move the needle in the HIF carb - it's pretty much fixed. At least Mini place should have some familiarity - hopefully excellent. Standard garage would likely have no idea these days.

Which is why it's been running so bad for so long
