cup holders? ideas needed

Post by wibble_puppy »

hi guys,

I have an illness which means that I need to have water always available - I drink about three or four litres a day. (no I'm not diabetic).

This means that when I'm driving I have to have an open bottle of water constantly to hand

That being the case, I'm looking for ideas on how to fit one, or two, cupholders into the van when I put it back together (for those who don't know it's completely disassembled, being restored).

The only aftermarket cup holders I have seen in motor factors are the type designed either to sit on top of a horizontal piece of dashboard or to slot into air vents in a vertical surface. Er, no good then.

I know that some Minors were fitted with little round ashtrays which swivel round under the parcel shelf when not in use, and I'd been pondering this as a starting point.

What do you think? All bright ideas gratefully received! :D

Thank you Lee! you were very quick off the mark, there!

Those are absolutely rank, aren't they, but definitely would do in an emergency. :D

The swivel ashtrays aren't very big, or deep (see below), so I think you would have trouble fitting a bottle of water in them but perhaps the 'swivel' part could be adapted somehow?

Or what about this?

Not quite as rank looking as the white one. Perhaps it could be fixed somewhere unobtrusive :-?

That's the exact ashtray doohickey thing I meant, Louise - cheers for that link :D

I would feel terrible cannibalising a real one though! :o - like you say, perhaps I could make up something along similar lines somehow...

You're right, that black plastic chappie isn't nearly as rank as the grey type.

I might feel a bit hassled about potentially damaging me paint, though, if I hung a can or bottle off the inside of the door.... do you know what I mean? :-? Hmm I'm not being very helpful here. Oh lord, maybe I could pad it, or something. Flock it.

There's always this one which folds away discreetly and looks even less rank than the over door holder. Wouldn't damage the paintwork but you'd need to find somewhere to fix it though.

(You can tell I am a bit bored at present )

How about putting the top back on the bottle and placing it on the shelf/in the glove box/on the passenger chair?

Drinking that much would mean an awful lot of topping up the cup, why not keep a milk crate behind you with plastic bottles in the partitions? That way no refilling until the next journey you just grab each bottle when needed! It's considered good to drink a couple of lts of fluid a day.

yeah about ten times a minute  to be honest andrew if i could rig up a drip i would, it get soooo boring having to drink all the time

i feel that it's safer to have the bottle ready to hand with the top off, that way i have to take less of my (limited) attention off the road each time i need a swig. And onne can tell you how much i drink!!! (actually.... oh no forget it  )

But think of the potential danger to other road users whilst you reach behind you or into the glove box.

I think the safest option would be to wear this every time you go out in the van

heya les :D yes i keep several bottles in the car/van, and get through a couple an hour. liking the milk crate idea. i still need a way of having the current bottle to hand in the front though, without having to keep turning round

I posted my reply at the same time. Still think the hat is the best option for hands free safe motoring. And it holds 2 bottles at once so will be handy when the radiator springs a leak.

Yes. I agree. Hat hair is never a good look. But consider the alternatives. What if you arrived at your destination so de-hydrated that you looked like this?

No amount of Oil of Olay would help. I think on this occasion practicality has to win over fashion.

I don't think we were separated at birth. Although I do have a twin (who used to own a Minor as well). What if I was really a triplet and the third Minor obsessed child was given away due to too many mouths to feed? Hmmmm :-? - (goes away to ponder)
