I'm off line for a while (Ray)

Sorry to disrupt normal service, but I did a very silly thing!
I double clicked an email attachment (virused) - my computer is now dead and hard disk might not be recoverable.
Therefore no more connection at home, and it might be a while before I get it fixed.
So if you need me urgently, then you'll need to call or text my mobile.
Ray.

Have you tried the Sophos Emergency Repair disks for DOS?
Search the Sophos website for ESDDISK... on a working PC of course.
Once prep'd you'll end up with about 6-8 floppys which you can boot off and cleanse a machine with.
Data's hardly ever lost, its merely a pig to get at. In the case of XP I've booted the disk in another machine many times and copied the physical registry files over (win32\config folder) from another PC just to get the thing to boot - albeit with all manor of complaint.
Best of luck with it.

Ray, Dunketh's right: a virus can't cause physical damage to a hard drive (not that I'm aware, anyway).
Set the BIOS to boot from CD first, then put a Linux LiveCD in. That will give you a running system from which you can examine the drive for data without having to run from it.
If you're coming down to Salisbury I can give you LiveCD and lend/sell you a DVD writer (if you don't already have one).

Sorry to hear that Ray, and apologies, 'cos I've moved this to off topic...
