how do i tell/check them?

First sign is physical play. Particularly bad play is evident without removal but ideally you need to remove the strut from the car. The swivel pins should only rotate around the legs and there should be no rocking or vertical movement whatsoever. Visually the threads of the legs should appear flat topped not sharply threaded like a wood screw.

Might be worth taking a new set with you the the U.S. anyway as I assume they'd be fairly expensive to post and they do wear out naturally after a while.
