need help/hint on replacing & maintaining the points on the fuel pump. never changed points on one before.

It's all in the workshop manual - in great detail. Don't worry too much about the fuel pump - they have them in USA you know !!

OK, evidently I am being very stupid here!

I am sitting here with the workshop manual and the driver's handbook.

Nowhere can I find where it says what model of fuel pump is fitted to the 1098 minor 1000 (let alone how to change the points etc.)

SU made three types of electrical fuel pumps: L, HP and LCS. I have an excellent book about repairing and restoring classic car parts, which I'm using to great effect as I trundle through the restoration of me van, but I need to know which model I'm on about...

hmm the scorned Haynes manual says it was the Type L which was fitted to Minors - though often subsequently exchanged for a Type SP or AUF...

No doubt all will be clear as soon as I have it all in pieces on the kitchen table

Fuel pump is definately type L & all Minors had the same type. Most of the different Manuals detail the strip down & rebuild of the pump.

The official BMC one is available on CD for £0.99 on ebay.

hi harry, cheers for replying, the Workshop Manual I've got is pubished by "British Leyland (Austin-Morris) Limited, Cowley, Oxford, England", copyright 1970. It's a real paper one so I can grab it and leaf through it

Are you looking in the right place in the Manual? it is comprehensively
covered in section 'B' (Fuel System) not in 'Electrical'. As a check, my
copy says "quote part No. AKD 530J when ordering this publication".
I now note that it is marked BMC 1966

where can you see how old your manual is? I can't seem to find it in my example. I do know it's not 1970 though!

Mine has partno AKD530 btw without the J

Right at the bottom of the same page as the part number.

Onne you have the same one as me: it's a reprinted facsimile of the 1970 edition - the 1970 details are right at the front but if you check the back page it has the modern publication details too

I looked right through both the fuel and the electrical indexes, to no avail - presumably the same phenomenon as when you lose your keys and you look everywhere and then your wife/husband points them out in a place in full view where you had already looked three times thank you so much!! and sorry for wasting your time everyone

The difference seems to be that mine is published by 'The British Motor
Corporation' whereas yours is probably by 'British Leyland'. Does not your later version still describe Petrol Pump rebuilding?

yup, indeedy it does - hurrah! (I think i had been so set in my sad addled mind on finding the term "fuel pump" that i failed to perform the necessary mighty mental gymnastics to recognise that the term "petrol pump" might just have been referring to the same thing i was looking for

Wibble, good luck then, our messages crossed in the ether. I followed the manual and rebuilt my pump seven years ago and have had no problems since.

I have fitted a Hardi pump. It is electronic so does not have points.

I also have a period one

On the bottom of each page it hasan Issue no. varying from 1 to 6

Also has a guide to recognizing UNF (or unified) nuts and bolts
