squeaky fan, (radiator fan)

Post by ben739 »

is there a way of tightening the fan. mine seems to be a bit squeaky, at idle. put some wd 40 in the pulley, and seemed to have worked for the time.

Sounds like the fan belt is at the end of its life. Is there much adjustment left? Is the belt sitting low in the pulleys? Try fitting a new belt.

If you've still got a dynamo, new fanbelt is almost certainly the answer. If you've had an alternator conversion it may be that the pulleys don't quite line up. I had to put spacer washes on the alternator mountings to move the alternator forward just a tiny bit ( about an eighth of an inch) and that cured it.

The fan itself can't squeak - unless it has fatigued and is about to tear itself to pieces. The water pump can squeak - and of course the belt can squeal - usually only when all the electrics are on - and you rev up from idle.
