One of the things you will find when driving a Moggy is that nearly everyone in the supermarket car-park learnt to drive in one, or had one as their first car!

Sort of. I bought my Land Rover when I was 16 but immediately started a ground-up restoration on it, and didn't drive it on the road until my 21st birthday. I think the first car I drove was probably my mum's Fiat Uno. The first car I both owned and drove was a 1967 Morris Minor that I bought when I was 19 as a temporary runabout. I drove it all over the place for a few months, then ended up selling it when it failed its MOT with some serious underbody rot.

Well, I learned to drive in one and although my dad had a Rover 2200TC at the time I wasn't allowed to drive that so I suppose a Mog was 'my' first car.

Although I learnt to drive in a Nissan Micra, the first car I was insured for was the 1969 Traveller which I still have. It was the only car I could drive for that crucial first few thousand miles after passing my test. I took the Institute of Advanced Motorists test in it & passed first time. I was even complimented on being up to speed & making progress on sections of road where the examiner had been with others in BMW's, Jags etc tottering along gingerly.
The good thing about the Minor as a first car is that it forces you to use the gearbox properly, & you learn to exercise caution when braking.

My first car was a 1955 Austin A30 which I learned to drive in and also took my test....
My second car was a Moggy.. ( far superior to the A30  ) I owned several Moggys during the early 70's and then went onto Spitfires, Stags and various MG's before returning to a Moggy 2 1/2 yrs ago and never looked back since  I wouldn't part with my Moggy now.... although during last year I was offered an Austin A35 at a reasonable price and bought it to use alongside the Moggy.... both great cars to drive but the Moggy wins hands down

First car I was insured on, although it was shared with my mother. 1964 trav, which sadly died from the dreaded tinworm and was broken for parts - some of which have been used on my Resto trav, and some of which went to Africa with Rayofleamington when he did the plymouth-banjoul challenge.

The next car I have driven is my current daily driver - fiesta (Booooring) and for a little while that was it - that was really mums car but I drove it when I came back from uni. Then came the convertible last summer, which was partially funded from the sale of bits from the old trav and is a family car.

Then, I bought my first car, on the 30th Dec 05 its "the beast" in my signature. Can't wait to get to drive it. And recently I was given the fiesta so that I had a car to get to work in.

In short, minor travs were the first car I was insured to drive on, and the first car I bought. Although a convertible and a fiesta have featured. This has all been in the 4 and a half years since I passed my test.

Do you think a Moggy would be an adequate choice for a nervous learner driver? I've heard people say that they help you to be a better driver but I'm concerned that a nervous driver might need something a little 'easier'?

I think a Moggy would make a great learner car - they're very easy to drive. The only slight difficulty might be if you're also taking lessons in a modern car, as the "feel" is a bit different and switching from one to the other might get confusing.

The pic in my signature is my car, I've had it for almost two years and its my first. I wouldn't have had anything else in retrospect. Just remember to underestimate the brakes and get some spanners!
