Electronic ignition

Post by Onne »

Does anyone know if there is electronic ignition available for the DK4Y distributor of the sidevalve?

So I can have her idle at 500 rpm :D

I very much doubt that an off the shelf kit would be available for the SV dizzy but you do know that the OHV distributor fits, don't you ?
Electronic ign kits are available for those.

If you were prepared to modify a kit, I'm sure it could be made to fit the original SV disctributor. Some parts are shared (like the rotor arm).

I seem to remember the very late SVs having a different distributor cap from the early ones - I haven't come across one in my travels though so I could be completely off track here........

The SV points plate is very big so I'm sure something could be mounted on it.
Once the original condensor is removed (unsoldered), there's a lot more room.

Try to modify the points plate rather than the kit. At least that way, you could salvage the ign kit if it all went pear shaped.

I might even try the points system first. I have however heard a SV run with electronic ignition, probably the lowest and smoothest idle I have ever seen/heard on a minor

I thank you Kevin.

Bill, no, I haven't seen him yet, let alone heard!
I'll have to come round one day and have a listen!

A slow tickover is all very well but I would rather have a fast tickover and good oil pressure!

You don't think a high tickover gives a false sense of security then Mike  I know which I would prefer :D

Both :D On a good engine that should be very doable.

My sidevalve has just been rebuilt, so that should be ok

A fair to good sidevalve shouldn't have any oil pressure worries. The bottom end is nice & strong, unlike the A series motors :-? .

A sidevalve is one of the smoothest motors around, especially with the standard flywheel.
