20W50 - the manuals were written many moons ago - the world has moved on since then.

30W is an old fashioned monograde oil. Just for your information

20w50 is what most will use.
Halfords do a 'classic car' 20w50 that's supposed to swell oil seals and help reduce leaks. I know one owner that swears by it so I've just bought a can for next time I need to top up or refill.

Best to check is the ratings on the can.
The Comma 20W50 has good ratings. SL I think

As Onne says its SAE30 is a completly different type of oil, I looked in my Haynes and it does list Duckhams 20w50 if you use 10w30 which is much thinner it will jsut use more oil and cause some interesting leaks because its so much thinner, and 20w50 it what should also be used in the gearbox as well.

You'll also get lower oil pressure and probably less effective lubrication.

I use Castrol 15W-40

Thats my Liquid Engineer, preserving the elasticity of my engine seals...helping control my oil leaks, with its anti-wear formulation guards against my engine wear and prolong the life of my engine.....well, so it says on the packet.

I use Castrol 15W-40
It's a bit thin for Minor, although better than the original 30SAE. That would leak out of my engine fairly quickly! 20w/50 is the ideal for the UK.

I've had no problems with 15w-40 and my car is used every day of the week.

Its a lot colder this time of year in Scotland than the SE of England, we have had no frosts yet here in Kent, but plenty in Scotland. Maybe the temperature difference accounts for the differing experience with the oil.

Not had any frost up where I am...as yet. High winds, rain..yes. Living here by the sea on the west coast...frost is not really a problem, neither is snow..as in, if it does snow...more times than often..its gone by lunchtime....I use this type of oil in most of my cars...and over the last 5 years..none has had a problem. However, if in a colder/warmer part of the country (time of year)...I do agree with you, grade of oil does make a difference and from my experience, is a must and should never be overlooked. I remember from when I was at a young age, helping my father in his garage...he would change all the oils in his cars and coaches depending wither it was for summer/winter use.

Hi Kevin,
I was just having a bit of fun...and I hope he takes it that way

Its just that I was brought up with engines all my life from the late 50's and when I complained to my father everytime he handed me the coldest part of the garage to work in with the coldest set of tools to work with...he just kept saying.....that, conditions dictate what grade to use in your engine, so get on with it !!!!! Brrrrrrrrrr I can hear him now!!!

anyway, if it does leak..its just shown that there is oil in there
