i need to repaint the wheels on my traveller, any ideas or tips on best way to strip old paint off, without having to take them off car.

I did wheels on my saloon two years ago. But the best way I found was to take the wheels off the car (one by one obviously ) and mask off the tire before any work. I then sanded down the inner wheel, primed it and then sprayed on the colour. They need doing again mind but that was the best way I found.

I'am sure you could just do the same with the wheels on, but you'd need to make sure you mask off a lot more that just the tires, especially the bodywork to make sure you don't get any paint on the main body which would be a disaster.

You really need to take the wheels off to do a decent job otherwise you will have paint on the wheelnuts and valve stems.

I think the best way to paint the wheels is to take them off the car, get the tyres removed and get the wheels media blasted (aluminium oxide) and etch primed. Thats the only way to ensure all the rust is gone. Then paint with celly primer and cellulose old english white.

Agree with John re media blasting or acid dipping, but after this we have them powdercoated, then sprayed,to the required colour, this gives a very durable finish to the wheel admmitedly not cheap.

I would get silver wheels for late cars powder coated, but I'm worried about the OEW looking right. I've seen a few Minors with bright white powder coated wheels.

Do they do a good OEW cream in powder coat?

So have I usually because the owners just asked for white instead of the right shade, out local place does them in Old English or the modern equivalent Rover Arum White.

Thats good to know, Arum white is as far as I can see virtually identical to OEW.

I used Magnolia Smoothrite on my wheels and they look really nice, but tins of that colour seem difficult to find around here lately - I wonder if Hammerite has stopped making it.

Halfrauds and if they dont have on the shelf they can make it up for you, but it will be cheaper to get Arum White of the shelf.

Why on earth do you want to paint wheels ON the car? The only way to do it right is to remove tyres, shot-blast and then primer undercoat and then topcoat. Just a tip when you refit tyres touch up edges of rims before inflating.
