Any sugestions for gearbox change?

Post by toberon »

Have got pick up that I have rebuilt on new galv chassis, fitted with 1275 midget engine. Back has been converted to hydralic tipper by us. Has taller diff fitted and the ford front disc brake conversion fitted. The engine is fitted with S spec crank and rods and has had the cam uprated along with head and oil pump. Although the standard gear box was rebuilt it has after 18 months started to show signs that it is not happy!!! Engine is also converted by us to run on L.P.G. gas. Just a tad different!!!!

Any sugestions for different box, I have looked into the ford type 9 conversion, but the kit alone without the box is about £460 Is this a good conversion ?

Many thanks Nick

Converted mine about 3 years ago. How much to gallon do you get out of yours?

Many boxes can be fitted - none are inexpensive - often easier to change complete matching engine and gearbox - ie use Ford engine and box. A recon A series box should take the power you have suggested without any great poblems - provided you take some care with it. Straight cut gears are available to upgrade the box - but really your power is likely about 70/80 bhp - which will be fine - just don't be too fierce in 1st gear !! In fact the weakest link in the transmission is the half-shaft - not the gearbox.
