Ford disk brake kit - dimensions etc...(Question from Les)

Post by rayofleamington »

Could I have a description of the ford based disc brake conversion from someone, I need to know to start with if the ford based ones are all the same where ever you buy them, whether 14'' and/or 13'' hubs come with the kit, and are they aluminuim. If the original hubs can be used, and are the components standard ford parts or pattern parts and do the holes in the uprights need opening out. Also is there a choice between ventilated discs and plain, and can they be interchanged.

Didn't dare move it in case I hit the wrong button and deleted the other thread - I don't want to get accused of 'excessive deletion' :-?

Regarding wheel/hub size:
The Ford wheel mounting interface is very standardised (same PCD, stud dia etc...) therefore the choice of wheel is up to you as long as it is Ford PCD (also same a peugeot?).
Depending on 'which' kit you get, the caliper dimensions will determine the minimum wheel diameter. Generally Ford's have been using 14" rims for over a decade so I'd not want to assume that 13" wheels will fit without checking the kit specifically.

Hubs - all bits are different to some degree. Some are ally, some are steel - you pays your money and takes your choice.

Vented disks or plain - normally plain, but some suppliers also sell kits to go with vented disks.

The other option is to have the disk kit supplied with an interface for the Minor wheel - for this they need to re-drill another set of holes in the disk to fit different hub dimensions, but otherwise it's not complex.

The Ford disc kits we produce are designed to fit a minimum wheel size of 13" as they are Escort MK1V based. The other Kit available from most other traders have been both Sierra and Escort based so not too sure on the former. The majority of disc kits available are vented rather than solid. Our kit does not require the swivel pin holes to be opened up, the other kit does. Standard Ford calipers, pads and discs can be used on our Ford PCD kit, but the discs need to be machined for Minor PCD or any other you choose, upto a max of 41/2 in PCD.Again our kit allows the upgrade from solid, to vented, and vented to RS turbo, and next year AP Racing 4 pot calipers. in each upgrade you will need to change to the appropriate caliper.
As to where you can purchase each kit, there are only two, MMcenter Bath now distributed through ESM to most Minor traders and our own kit, which is currently available direct from us or Bull Motif and Mid Sussex Minors.
Sorry if this reads like an advert but I have attempted to answer the question diplomatically.
Confused as to its posting in wrong section. :o
