Give it a clean and a run to see where it seems to be coming from. My first guess is the rocker cover, the gasket leaks often :)

as it is on top of the exhaust manifold, there are very few likely causes
- leaking rocker cover gasket
- you keep overfilling the dashpot oil
- engine breather is blocked so that oily air is vented though the cap spraying oil around.
- something completely abnormal!

For the engine breather, you would also find oil on top of the rocker cover and if you revved the engine you are likely to see a jet of fumes out of the filler cap.

Are you sure it's oil? if so - it must stink when the exhaust heats up. It could be residue left from fuel spillage from leaking carb. If it is oil - then blocked breather or excessive fumes being drawn into the air filter seem likely. And is that more oil coating the engine room floor below the carb ? Remove the oil filter nd inspect the filter - is it soaking in oil ? Try running the engine with the oil filler cap removed - does a plume of smoke emerge when you rev it up ?

i thkn i may have filled the plunger on the carb up to full. and it has dripped down. i have used 3 in 1 oil to top it up so think thats the problem. but gonna change the rocker cover gaskets to see anyway.

You can nly put a tiny amount of oil in the SU - and that looks like thick black oil - not 3 in 1 - inspect that air filter - it's only minutes work.o

yeah air filter seems good, clean and dry, nothing out of norm. and the oil filler cap off and revving it is normal as well. do you think the 3 in 1 oil ran down and burned onto the manifold ?

Must be ! It should burn away quite quickly - or take a rag with white spirit to it.
