i got it all back together, and changed plugs, wires, and cleaned up coil and starter. i am not sure what else i need to do. my mate has a timing gun but it starts up well, so does that mean the timing is okay?

It will do no harm to have it timed to get it spot on, as its surprising how far out an engine can be but still run ok and you will lose economy and performance.

You need to try it on the road - if you hear pinking it's too far advanced (so retard it) - if you don't - it may be retarded. So advance it slightly till you hear pinking - then retard again until you don't! But what car is this dizzy from - it's advance curve may not be ideal for your engine.

Well done - excellent result. What was wrong with the old dizzy - have you performed the PM yet ?
