which plug?
If you mean a core plug, then yes it will get worse over time.
If it is the block drain tap then it's easy to replace by unscrewing, then screwing in a new one.

Replacing a core plug is not a 'fun' job.
You have to butcher out the old plug (drill it, or make a hole in it with a sharp implement then pull it out. Clean the hole in the block VERY carefully with a rotary wire brush. Fit a new plug and bash it in the middle to expand it to a tight fit.
If the block is rusted where the plug should seal then you sould use a sealant as well, but make sure the selaant is applied correctly (clean and dry block surface).

As Ray says not a fun job (core plug) especially if its an awkward to get at one the only good thing is they dont cost much, is this what you mean.
