DOH!
I want to get at the wiring at the switch for the indicators, and thought removing the steering wheel would be a breeze.

Expecting to find a screw underneath the horn button, I prised off the red M. Nope. Then tried to prise off the surround. Broke it Very upset.

But still no idea how to get the steering wheel off!

Any ideas???

You remove the centre horn push (take wires off horn first to stop it blowing!) - there is a screw in from the side if I remember correctly. then you will find a largish nut - undo this with a socket - and then bang the steering wheel from below with your fists. It may be very tight - it may be loose - it may also jump up and smack you in the face - be ready for that! One way to avoid this is to leave the nut on just at the end of the thread.

On my '66 saloon, the indicator wiring is under the plastic shroud - this can be removed by undoing the self-tapping screws. If necessary, unbolt the steering column support on the facia.

Do take out the fuse for the horn!

so i almost had it, it must be under the contact for the horn!

Yup, the screw to remove the centre horn push is for the banjo style steering wheel, when you have found the nut dont undo it completely leave it a couple of turns on otherwise you will wack yourself in the chin or worse when it comes of, its a bit tight as its on a type of tapered spline.
Normally to free the wheel you can try rocking from side to side while pulling upwards or if very tight (quite often) a tap on the underside with a soft faced mallet one side at a time will shift it.
