Thermostat Housing

Hello
Am i right in thinking that to remove the housing to get at the thermostat the heater pipe needs to be removed.
Is it okay to only remove the cylinder head nuts holding the heater pipes.
Is there a way to remount the pipe to make it easier to get at the thermostat in future.
Its a standard 1965.

Yes.

Yes, you should be able to pull it out of the way then.
Is there a way to remount the pipe to make it easier to get at the thermostat in future.
What I have done is to mount the pipe on TOP of the cylinder head bolts and then use two more to secure the pipe down. It makes it a little higher but at leat you don't have to worry about re-torqueing the head nuts.

What Cam suggests is probably the best solution, after all you do not
need to remove the housing very often, but if you have a look at the
earlier(948cc) Minors you will see that the water pipe on those comes
out of the bottom radiator hose and then passes along the exhaust
manifold and then bends around the rear of the cylinder head.
That type is secured by two nuts on the manifold not the cylinder
head nuts.
