Gearbox Oil

There has been a bit of discussion on engine oil in the past which also applies to the gearbox or so I thought, however a contact from Australia says
Its general opinion synthetics are not for Minors, but if you change it regular(3000miles) I don't think it matters too much what you use in the engine.
But beware of using modern engine oil in the Morris gearbox as it eats
phosphorous bronze bushes :o
This was not a problem I was aware of and it might be down to the greater mileages covered down under so just be careful what you put in your box, has anyone over here experienced this problem.

I've heard similar comments though sometimes these are old wives tails.
However there is always a possibility that the modern oil additives, (designed to break down sludge and carbon deposits in the engine) could have an adverse affect on the gearbox, but why would you use an expensive engine oil in the box anyway? as it is there only for lubrication and doesn't have to suffer the temperature extremes or the effect of combustion derposits then I'd only bother using a 'cheap' engine oil for the gearbox.
Not sure if everyone would agree with me though
*ducks and runs for cover*

One lesson I did learn was not to use 'gearbox oil' like EP80/90 as I ruined a few gearboxes before I relised this was a mistake.

Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea....the series MMs use
HYPOID(rear axle oil) in their gearboxes. All later cars use engine
oil. It doesn't seem to be common knowledge that the rear axle
oil we are all using contains a chemical which has no effect on steel
but DOES attack the material used in the thrust washers in the
differential!

I`M getting confused with all this my gearbox is empty and has to be filled tomorrow but what with, the morris minor book I have looks like saying engine oil.

I have a 1962 morris minor 948cc 2 door.

if engine oil is to be used can I use Duckams?

Just use the same oil as you put in the engine.

Duckams make lots of different oils, so without knowledge of WHICH Duckams oil I can't advise specifically, but if you would put it in your engine, then you can put it in your gearbox.
