Mixing oils

Post by chrisd87 »

Quick question - is it OK to top up a car filled with 20W/50 oil with 15W/40?

Me ??? Sorry to keep you waiting! Stick with 20W50 in summer, but in winter 15W40 probably ok.

Ok, I was wrong :D

I expected to be told that modern oils are vastly superior etc etc

Thanks for the replies. I topped it up with 15W/40 the other day as it's all I can find locally and was a bit worried it might not mix properly with the other oil.

Have you tried Tesco's?
Normally I wouldn't recommend you buy car service items from anything other that your local parts supplier but Tesco's do have 20/50 and the big one's are open all day.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I have just got a gallon of oil from Morrisons. It was £4.95. Idont have to worry too much what viscosity it is as it isnt in the engine long enough.

Sadly ASDA have recently put the price of their oil up - so I can't recommend that one any more!

Lidl's also sell cheap 15w40 which meets ACEA A3/B3 standards. I've been using it in our mower that uses as much oil as my minor. I may try it in the minor if things get really cold.

Hadn't thought of that - I looked in Sainsbury's petrol station yesterday and they only had Castrol GTX 15W/40.

They are but they are just to thin for the moggie engine and will increase the leak capacity of the engine.

Both Asda and Tesco sell it in store but it may not be on their forecourts, and I think Wilkinsons also do one. Another old favorite that is often kept in the smaller motor factors is Comma Oil.

Kevin, is the comma oil you mention called 'motorway 20w50'? If so I've never bought it because there were no ratings on the label. I havent been able to find oil in either of the tesco stores near me :(

Well its a long time since I have been in my local Tesco`s superstore (its manic where I live) and ~I have not used the garage for a while.
The Comma oil is premium 20w50 and is rated API SE and is sold by Bull Motif, the Motorway one you mention I cant read the label on their website so I dont know.

Thanks for the link Kevin. The 'sonic' 20w50 achieves API SJ, which I've never seen on a 20w50.
