I'm going to try to fix joes oil leak by replacing the sump gasket (hopefully it's that and not the crank seal )
I'm hoping the gasket locates a bit more effectively than the one for the rocker cover.
Any advice or tips on getting the job right would be appreciated.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
make sure the sump flanges are nice and clean.
put the gasket on the block first, is easier.
make sure the half moon type gasket sticks out about 2 to 3 mm equal on both sides.also make sure if it is cork that it is well downin the metal flanges.
tighten the bolts in sequence
handy to lift the sump up with a trolley jack to hold it in place while putting bolts on
Stick the gasket to the sump with hylomar - just a very thin film - and none on the block. If any doubts about the end seals you could put a layer of silicone sealer on them before putting the sump as - as steve says - trolley jack helps!
The long side gaskets should overlap the cork seals. Normally the sump doesn't leak - it's the timing case cover and/or the rear crank seal that leaks - and often it' because there is pressure in the block due to excessive 'blow-by' on the rings. Make sure the breathers are all clear - and take the rocker cover breather to the carb so it draws a slight vacuum on the block when running.
Peetee, try and lift the car as high up as you can to give you room to work underneath when you're lying on your back scraping off bits of old gasket. Some goggles might be in order as you'll most likely have oil dripping in your face!
Had just enough time to get Joe up on ramps this morning and without removing anything found that the leak is coming from the engine area that is hidden by the starter motor. Now part of the sump gasket is there of course but is there a sump plug or sensor hole or anything else there that could be causing the leak?
