OK because I couldn't do the brake pipes, see another thread, I thought I'd do the bearings and seals.

I studied the old bearings - writing on outside face. and the Haynes manual which tells me the side marked thrust is towards the centre of the hub.

BUT my nice new bearings don't say thrust and now I'm not sure whih way round they go!!!!
The question is (see picture) is this the thrust side of the bearings facing down in this photo?

Or to put it another way is the out side of the bearing upper most?

If you look at the bearings you will see that from one way the centre of the race and balls could be pushed out of the outer. But on the other side the ball bearings run up against a shoulder in the outer and cannot possibly push out ........this is the thrust side and should be assembled from both sides with this face of the bearing facing inward.

In your picture the bearings are thrust side down because it would be possible to push the centre and balls out upwards.

The outer edge if you turn this bearing over will be wider so that the balls cannot escape and if it doesn't actually say "Thrust side" it will normally have the bearing identification numbers stamped on it.
