It's a device that pumps the fuel from the tank to the carb! It 'ticks' quite loudly - worry when it stops ticking. If there is a leak on the inlet side - or you have run out of fuel - it will tick constantly - but normally it should just tick every few seconds. Think of it as the car's heart beat!

Maybe it had more sound proofing - stuffed up behind the glovebox liner!

Or the fuel pump may be mounted in a different place?
As BMC says I'm surprised you find it annoying - I find it womb-like and soothing

(all I need is a leaky screen to supply the amniotic fluid

)
Also as BMC has mentioned it should only be a regular tick when you are driving. If it's ticking fast further investigation is needed.
The only other thing I can think of is to rubber mount the pump to stop the sound transmitting through the metalwork.

i love how random mine is - apart from the 3/4 chugs you get when you put the ignition on, it makes random noises when sitting in traffic!

Ohhh - careful --- that comment will lead to long stories about 'fuel evaporation' - causes and remedies!!

Or, just possibly, helpful advice on something that is a real problem for folk who use their cars as an only means of transport and occasionally in traffic on hot days...
