Rubber suction pads

Post by Squiggle »

Hiya

I have windscreen demister that consists of a strip of brown bakelite, a length of curly wire behind, an on/off switch and two brown rubber suction pads to attach it to the drivers window.

The pads are attached to the unit by chrome nuts.

BUT, the rubber is elderly and not soft enough to form a suction.

I want to keep the brown pads if possible and wondered if there is any way I could revive the rubber.

If not, does anyone know of a way I can attach them to the screen and still be able to remove them if necessary. Rules out superglue eh?

I have some clear silicon bathroom sealant and wondered about using that. The unit does get fairly hot.

Any ideas welcome.

You could use a spot of Polyurethane glue on each pad, something like Sikflex or Tiger Seal, or if you know a friendly windscreen fitter, the stuff they stick modern screens in with (basically the same stuff but thicker).

Once cured it will certainly hold it OK.

I recently sold a "new old stock" bakelite demister on Ebay and now I've bought my fifties Traveller I really regret it :(

Try using the interior mirror double sided sticky pads, you can cut them into a circle and stick to the original suckers then onto the screen, probably cost £1.00 for 4. :D :D

Will ask Autoglass when I finally get around to asking them to replace the windscreen rubber.

Shame you sold it. They work a treat. I'll keep an eye out for one for you....

Thanks
