Joe's Ital 1275 engine needs timing. there are several teeth to bee seen by the engine pulley. Which one do I line up?

Don't worry about it - get it started then slowly adjust till it idles most smoothly. Then road test it - driving hard up a hill in top gear listren for any 'pinking' - if there is any retard slightly, if none advance slightly but not so much it affects the idle. Check again for pinking - if any detected you must retard slightly. You have now optimised the timing for your engine !

I'd rather know what the book says to get me started. The idle is a bit hit and miss because of the mixture issues we've discussed.

Then go buy the book!
The method described is the most accurate available to you, next to a rolling road.

It's unlikely I'm going to find one of them in time for the website rally don't you think?

Fair enough, but my reason to question it's ability to give results is justified given the extensive problems I've had with the carb.

Peetee, could you not ask the marina forum? I remember someone posted a link recently for another thread.

Just set it to the middle one then - to get you started - as long as it's not pinking you won't do any harm.

I set it to the bigger tooth (the one on the right) and it's running really well. If I had to be critical I'd say there is a bit of lag as you accelerate past 2000 rpm but I shall experiment a bit more if I get the time.
Thanks for the help folks.

You should check the vacuum advance unit is working ok - diaphragm not burst. When this is faulty it makes for a 'dull' engine. And don't be frightened to advance it a bit more until it 'pinks' - then take it back slightly.
