BIG nut on rear hub

Does anyone happen to know what size socket is needed for the big flat nut on the rear hub (you can see with the half shaft removed). I want to change the rear axle half shaft oil seals on "Dibble" the chop top.

My callipers show just under 47mm, or 1.84 inches in proper measurement. That equates to just under 1" 7/8. Is this the size of socket needed, or is it a rare Whitworth size? I don't have any tools that fit it (apart from pipe wrench, which I'm loathe to use).

any ideas?

I'm getting a feeling of Deja-vu here ;)

48mm will work, as will 1 7/8" AF, but technically it's 1 1/8" Whitworth. HarryMango may be able to sell you a spanner that will fit it...

Although having said that you don't need to take the hub off to change the half-shaft O ring and gasket. You only need to take it off to change the hub oil seal and bearings.

Hmm I suppose this means I need to buy a 47mm socket to change the hub bearings on my 68
although I may already have one from doing something else so I'll go hunting before I buy one

Actually I've just checked and 47mm might not fit (it depends on the tolerances). 1 1/8" Whitworth is 1.86" AF which is 47.244mm. A 48mm socket definitely does work, albeit a little sloppily, as does 1 7/8" AF. The last time I checked HarryMango had some cheap NOS 1 1/8" Whitworth open ended spanners as well as some 1 7/8" AF combination spanners for sale.

Hello folks

I still have some NOS Bedford Vanadium 1W x 1,1/8W Open Ended. Price is £5 ea. This is a V heavy duty spanner which weighs nearly 2KG so when packed parcel post is £7.70

I also have some 3/4W NOS Bedford Open Ended to fit Crankshaft & Camshaft nuts @ £3 ea.

If both spanners bought together postage would be the same. Alternately can be collected from Leicester, rallies or AGM etc.
